We can trace the origin of the pizza to Southern Italy 977 AD, and serious food connoisseurs know that more specifically Naples, Italy is the birthplace of the modern day incarnation of this savory baked good. It was in 1889, Naples, Italy when a Neapolitan Piazzaiolo, pizza maker, Raffaele Esposito created a pizza with tomato sauce, mozzarella and fresh basil leaves to honor the visit of Queen Margherita of Savoy. He was inspired by the Italian flag's green, white and red. Legend has it, this successful dish would later be named Pizza Margherita the flagship of Pizza Napoletana in honor of the Queen and serve as the template of our modern day versions of the most versatile food offering ever created. Over the decades, countless combinations of toppings have catapulted pizza to the number one food consumed around the world. And the humble Pizza Margherita remains the top selling pizza over a century after its creation.
